Color of money

I have a question, as I just read something here that baffled me a bit.
Don Rosa, and H.W. Fluks seemed to suggest that the whole yellow coin
thing is a European tradition, to accomodate local currency.
In that case, I really don't understand why the coins are yellow in
Norwegian
comics, as our currency is grey-ish. As a kid I always thought that they
were yellow
because US money were yellow (Until I actually saw a Dollar, then I just
thought
it was some kind of international colouring thing).
So, I decided to check in one of my US comics (U$ 277, The Great Steamboat
Race),
and on the second page Scrooge opens up his bin, and pours out a bag of
yellow coins.

I can also never remember to have seen a picture of the money bin with any
other colour
either, but when I think of it, it does seem kind of strange that they are
yellow in the first
place. I don't think I've ever seen a yellow coin (or a green bill for that
kind of matter, $ bills
are much more pale).

The question you say? Oh, yes, what kind of color are the coins suppoused to
have,
and why are they sometimes(?) yellow?
