Fabio and Frank gave very accurate descriptions why Franquins Marsupilami is
so much better than the Disney version. The Marsupilami looks like a cuddly
pet but eats living piranhas, it is innocent and childlike but a fierce
fighter, it can use it's enormously long tail to pick fruits and also to
knock out tigers, it is a loving father and husband and a relentless enemy,
it is hurt if its wife is angry at him but cannot be hurt by a mad
rhinoceros. This is funny and quite serious at the same time which does not
contradict but fits perfectly together. I think that is one of the major
characteristics of Franquins work (more obvious in his later works), which
might be called an equivalent of a crying clown - funny and sad
simultaneously. Take away one side - and you get a one-sided character.
