Maybe they are having a similar relationship that Daisy has with Donald
(and Gladstone). They are dating but seeing other people as well. (How
modern! One could write an interesting essay about that). Donald seems
to look at other women whenever Daisy isn´t around. Daisy himself is
dating both Gladstone and Donald.

Same goes with that another thread about HD&L's parents. These
characters are not ideal examples in moral standards. So they prefer
adventuring (or whatnot Don has in mind) to parenting. Those were
horrible kids at first, who wouldn't want to get out and take a
(long)holiday? Then something happened and they could never come back.
Donald put the kids to shape and now they are respectable junior
woodchucks. Maybe real parents weren't doing such a good job and Donald
was better for them since he teached them to take responsibility (since
he himself is far for perfect).

This is a comic book world, its not about setting an example or teaching
kids how to be good parents and or how to properly date (not directly,
anyway). Those things are all well and good, but they would make boring
stories. Well, you *could* write good stories, but it would surely limit
the scope of what the stories could be about.
